Nashville too much for Lakeside

- KRISHNAN COLLINS

Lakeside ended the Chartwell’s Holiday Classic with a 5938 loss to Nashville at Lakeside Athletic Complex Thursday.

The Lady Scrappers (13-2) have had a great season so far, and Lakeside head coach Jay Williams acknowledged Nashville’s talent.

“Nashville is a really, really, really good team,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of talent. Just all around, they’re a good team.”

Lakeside (6-5) started the game well, but the Lady Rams had trouble dealing with the Lady Scrappers’ athleticism.

“We started off the way we wanted to with our gameplan,” Williams said. “We were getting the looks that we wanted. I believe that at one point we even held the lead for just a little bit, but ultimately their athleticism and tenacity just kind of sped us up, and we made some poor decisions.”

Williams said Nashville’s speed and chemistry made the Lady Scrappers hard to play against.

“They’ve been together for a while,” he said. “They know exactly what they’re doing, what they want to do, and they do it really well. They do a good job of speeding the offense up. They make you think quick. They rely on making you make bad decisions, and they definitely will capitalize off of it.”

Sarah Porter led Lakeside with 18 points, and Ronni Formby scored eight points for the Lady Rams.

Kyleigh Scoggins led Nashville with 18 points, and Lauren Carver tallied 17 for the Lady Scrappers.

As a whole, Williams said his team learned several different things in the three games they played. After a 56-38 loss to Benton to open the classic, Williams said his team realized it needed to play with a lot of energy and the will to win for all four quarters.

The Lady Rams took down Mount St. Mary 50-28 Wednesday, and Lakeside had to deal with a Belles team that was playing hard on defense. Williams said the officials called the game tightly, so Lakeside learned a lot from that game.

“Then Nashville, they gave us speed,” he said. “They gave us that look we needed in order to be able to defend those types of opponents. Throughout the whole classic we learned a bunch. It sucks we didn’t get those two wins, but you know in actuality we’ll get better from it.”

With conference play on the horizon, Williams said playing games three days in a row was a positive for the Lady Rams.

“I don’t think we ever gave up,” he said. “It’s definitely good for our stamina coming off the break. Those are the probably the most positive things that I can think of just yet. Just being able to play, getting out there to compete and getting ready for conference.”
