Works sought for next ‘Art Moves’ exhibit

- BRAD PARKER

“Art Moves,” an art display along the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail, is accepting entries for the next round of artwork that will go on display in April.

“‘Art Moves’ is a temporary art exhibit. It is artwork submitted by area artists or even a little broader outside the area and surrounding states,” Mary Zunick, cultural affairs manager for Visit Hot Springs and director of the Hot Springs Area Cultural Alliance, said.

“We make reproductions of the original artwork, on large sheets of metal, then mount and display them along the trail for a year,” Zunick said.

The Hot Springs Area Cultural Alliance, the Hot Springs Art Advisory Committee and Hot Springs Parks and Trails are collectively producing the outdoor exhibition of paintings, drawings and photographs that are reproduced onto metal panels to be displayed along the Greenway Trail, a news release said.

The theme for the 2022 “Art Moves” exhibit is “Creative Roots” and will celebrate the varied cultural backgrounds of Arkansans, the release said.

Artists are asked to draw inspiration from their own cultural roots and traditions or the state’s collective cultural heritage, it said.

“It’s kind of taking us back to where each and every artist is inspired by their individual heritage,” Zunick said. “I’m excited to see the work that is created along that theme.”

She said the theme coincides with this year’s Arts & The Park festival, which kicks off April 29 and runs through May 8.

April 29 will “likely be the day that the ‘Art Moves’ art exhibit opens,” she said. “And the nice thing about ‘Art Moves,’ is it is not just during Arts & the Park. It is down here for anybody who’s out walking along the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail to enjoy all year.”

“Artists who are interested can go to http://www.hotsprings.arts.org under the ‘Call For Artists’ tab, and there’s all the information that they will need to be able to submit their artwork,” Zunick said.

According to the release, a panel of jurors will select up to 15 works of art from the submissions and area galleries will display the framed original artworks during the 10-day Arts & The Park celebration.

The entry deadline is Tuesday, March 1. Notification of acceptance will be made on March 4, and an opening reception will be held Friday, April 29.

The exhibition will be open from April 29 until the spring of 2023, with original artwork exhibited from April 29 to May 8, at Arts & The Park.

Regional artists — Arkansas and surrounding states — are eligible, and 2-D original paintings and drawings, photography, digital artwork will be accepted.

Selected artwork will be reproduced on a 30-by-40-inch metal sign, and the original canvas needs to be of the same ratio; for example, 9-by-12 or 12-by-16.

If their artwork is selected, the artist must either furnish a high-resolution photo of the unframed artwork or be able to bring original unframed artwork for a scheduled photo session and be able to deliver and pick up framed artwork for exhibit during the Arts & The Park festival.

Submitting artists will have sole ownership and rights to all submitted works.

There is no entry fee, and artists of the selected artwork will receive $100 for the rights to reproduce and display the artwork for the Greenway Trail exhibit. Copyright and ownership of the painting belong to the artist, the release said.

Winning artists will allow the cultural alliance, Art Advisory Committee and Parks and Trails to reproduce and publish the artwork for marketing purposes.

Original artwork does not have to be for sale to be included in the exhibits. If an artist would like to have the original exhibited in a local gallery during Arts & The Park, the artist will need to follow that gallery’s commission agreement. The cultural alliance, the advisory committee or Parks and Trails will not receive a portion of the commission.
