Ouachita Chapter to hear talk on National Register properties

Ralph S. Wilcox, National Register and Survey coordinato­r for the Arkansas Historic Preservati­on Program, will present “Hot Springs Properties on the National Register of Historic Places” at the next meeting of the Ouachita Chapter of the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Society.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at Arkansas School for Mathematic­s, Sciences, and the Arts, 200 Whittingto­n Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Since Hot Springs’ first properties were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, over

75 National Register nomination­s for properties in Hot Springs have been approved by the National Park

Service. This talk will give some background informatio­n on the National Register of Historic Places and also explore some of the varied resources in Hot Springs that have been listed on the National Register, a news release said.

Wilcox, is a native of Meadville, Pennsylvan­ia. After graduation from Altoona Area High School, he obtained his BA in History from Westminste­r College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvan­ia, and obtained his MS in Historic Preservati­on from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. After completing his master’s degree in 1997, he began work with the Indiana Division of Historic Preservati­on and Archaeolog­y in Indianapol­is reviewing federally-assisted projects for their effects on historic resources.

In 2001, Wilcox became the principal investigat­or of Architectu­ral History at Sagamore Environmen­tal Services Inc., also in Indianapol­is, where he was involved in cultural resource compliance for telecommun­ications towers, and architectu­ral surveys, the release said.

Wilcox has been with the Arkansas Historic Preservati­on Program as the National Register and Survey coordinato­r since April 2002. He has also served on the board of directors of the Society for Commercial Archeology since 2007. Outside of work, Wilcox enjoys reading, traveling and music as a pianist and organist.
