Schmitt wins three swimming titles

BENTON — Lake Hamilton seventh grade swimmer Aubrey Schmitt won three state championsh­ips at the USA-2023 Arkansas 14 and Under Group Championsh­ips.

Competing in the 13- to 14-year-old girls division, Schmitt won state championsh­ips in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:48.28 and dropping 56.19 seconds), 500-yard freestyle (5:10.96 and dropping 7.63 seconds) and 200-yard butterfly (2:11.83 and dropping 2 seconds).

Schmitt swam Speedo Sectional priority time cuts in each of her wins and set Central Arkansas Racers team records in the 13- to 14-year-old girls division.

Schmitt also placed second in the 400-yard individual medley.

BLOUNT REPEATS AS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RUSSELLVIL­LE — The Great American Conference announced that Hot Springs native Gracen Blount repeated as women’s golfer of the week in the league.

Henderson State’s Blount finished as the medalist at the Emerald Coast Classic, winning the event by four strokes with a 54-hole total of even-par 213.

She led the No. 4 Reddies to their fifth tournament win of the season, HSU winning by 23 shots at a classic that featured nine top50 teams.

Blount’s final-round 3-under 68 marked the lowest round of the tournament.

HSU’s Nathan Cossement won men’s golfer of the week honors. Cossement finished fourth at the Oak Tree Invitation­al and helped lead the Reddies to a two-stroke win over No. 2 Oklahoma Christian.

He finished with a tournament-high 15 birdies.

GAC LISTS WEEKLY BASEBALL AWARDS

RUSSELLVIL­LE — Harding’s Davis Welch and HSU’s Ryan Galvan shared co-pitcher of

the week honors, and Oklahoma Baptist’s Kade Self earned the player of the week award.

Through two rain delays, Welch threw six scoreless innings in a 10-0 win over Arkansas-Monticello. Welch has not allowed an earned run in three of his six appearance­s this season.

Galvan took on reigning pitcher of the year Jeremy Adorno and handed the SAU ace the first loss of his career. Galvan limited SAU to just one run and five hits in six innings. He struck out eight batters and lowered his ERA to 2.36.

GAC ANNOUNCES SOFTBALL AWARDS

RUSSELLVIL­LE — Arkansas Tech’s Kassie Mayberry won the player of the week award,

and SAU’s Sydney Ward claimed pitcher of the week honors.

Mayberry went 7-for-14 across five games, hitting .400 against No. 1 Rogers State. She tallied four extra-base hits against Ouachita Baptist.

Ward threw her second no-hitter of the season in a win against HSU, and then notched a season-high 10 strikeouts in another win over HSU.

KAMOE CLAIMS AWARD

RUSSELLVIL­LE — The GAC announced that HSU’s Mulan Kamoe won the women’s tennis player of the week award.

Kamoe captured wins in No. 1 singles and doubles against

Ouachita Baptist. She helped HSU claim the doubles point against No. 33 Northeaste­rn State, earning the clinching point by defeating Emilia Cosatto, the ninth-ranked player in Division II.

GAC AWARDS T&F HONORS

RUSSELLVIL­LE — SAU’s Kamrin Hooks and Kailyn Thomas claimed the women’s track and women’s field athlete of the week awards respective­ly.

SAU’s Ja’Kamron Zackery won the men’s field athlete of the week award, and East Central’s Michael Iyali won the track award.

Hooks’ times of 12.44 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 25.60 seconds in the 200-meter dash rank as the top times in the conference. She finished in the top 10 in those events at the Mississipp­i College Spring Cleaning Classic.

Thomas notched three topfour results at the same classic, winning the discus competitio­n with a throw of 40.94 meters.

Zackey ended with three top-five finishes at the Cleaning Classic, winning the hammer throw with a distance of 49.89 meters.

Iyali won the 3,000-meter steeplecha­se at the Hendrix College Alumni Invite with a time of 9:37.86.
