Juanita E. Winn

-

On March 18, 2023, Juanita Ellen Winn peacefully passed away surrounded by her family. She was 95. She goes to join her late husband of 58 years, James A. Winn (Jimmy).

She was an amazing lady and loving mother to her daughter, Dr. Sandra Burchett and her husband, Dr. Keith Blackwell, of Boston, Mass,; her son, Allen Winn and his wife, Cindy Collie, of Robinsville, N.C.; and doting “Nana” to grandchildren Kimberley Burchett of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ellen Pope of Eymet, France, Daniel Winn of Cabot, Ark., Brandye McCue of Eunice La., Tracie Woodall of Hot Springs, Ark.; and 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Juanita was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Sept. 12, 1927, to the late Hal R. and Ellen M. Black. After marriage, Juanita and Jimmy lived in Scott, Fort Smith, and Piggott, Ark., before settling in Hot Springs in 1963.

Juanita considered members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church as a second family, and in recent years considered herself blessed to be surrounded by the residents and staff community at West Shores Senior Living. Juanita’s beloved animal family included Mitzi, her adored German shepherd, and a stable of award-winning Arkansas racehorses. The most notable of these was Proper Reality, who in 1988 won the Arkansas Derby and the Illinois Derby, and ran in the Kentucky Derby. His dam, Proper Princess, was also a stakes winner. Although she and Jimmy coowned the horses, they were bred and raced in her name.

Juanita was Jimmy’s steadfast business partner through many successful endeavors and worked tirelessly to support her family and friends.

Juanita was always there with a glowing smile and a hug for so many. We will miss our beautiful mother and Nana, but are comforted knowing how eternally happy she is to be reunited with Jimmy.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. today, March 21, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, 155 Section Line Road, Hot Springs, Ark.

A celebration of Juanita’s life will be at noon today, March 21, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, with Commissioned Ruling Elder Susie Wright officiating. A reception will follow.

Burial will be at later date at Crestview Cemetery in Hot Springs, Ark.
