Lawrence G. Walker

Lawrence (Larry) G. Walker, M.D. of Hot Springs passed away on March 20, 2023.

Dr. Walker was born the last of five children, to Pearl and Joe Walker on July 3, 1931, in Arkadelphia, Ark. Arkadelphia was Larry’s family’s home until he was 12 years old. At that time, his family moved to Hope, Ark., where he resided until he graduated from high school.

After Larry’s high school graduation in 1949, he began a six-year tour of duty in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1957. During that time, he qualified for pilot training and was commissioned as a second lieutenant flying C119’s and C47’s. While in the Air Force, he married Martha Jo Kizzia. Together they had two children.

Larry attended Henderson State Teachers College for two years, and then he entered the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. During Larry’s junior year at UAMS, he was awarded a Fellowship from LSU Medical School to study Tropical Medicine in Panama. After graduating from medical school in 1963, he served a one-year internship at St. Vincent’s Infirmary in Little Rock, Ark.

Upon completion of Larry’s internship, he returned for three years to his birthplace of Arkadelphia to join Dr. P. R. Anderson and Dr. Louis Tilley in their practice of Family Medicine. However, the majority of Larry’s years of practicing medicine were in Monroe, La. as an anesthesiologist. He retired in 1992, at the age of 63, in order to care for his wife, Jo, who had become disabled with Multiple Sclerosis.

Two years after Larry’s wife died, he married Lavetta Halley. This past November, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.

Larry is survived by his spouse, Lavetta; a son, Lawrence Walker, Jr. (Sherry) of Hazel Green, Ala.; a daughter, Maurine Crank (Wes) of Little Rock, Ark., and three grandchildren, Walker, Thomas, and Max Crank.

To honor Dr. Walker’s memory, a private interment will be held in Restland Memorial Park, Nashville, Ark.
