- By Traci OConnell Santa Clarita Ballet Company

Anatalia Hordov, one of three ballerinas in the US, has been invited to compete in Genee International Ballet Competition. Hordov has trained with the Santa Clarita Ballet since 2002. She is one of only ten students worldwide, and three students in the US, invited to compete in London this September at the most prestigious ballet competition in the world, the Royal Academy of Dance Genee Competition.

From the time Anatalia started her training at the Santa Clarita Ballet, it was clear she had unusual talent. Her desire and technique far surpassed her age. She advanced quickly within Santa Clarita Ballet, and in 2012 was one of 12 students selected to study at the Colburn Dance Academy in Los Angeles. In 2014, she placed third in the Youth American Grand Prix and has also attended intensive workshops only accessible to the most promising young dancers.

The significance of Anatalia’s achievements and inclusion in this year’s Genee Competition cannot be understated; the Genee is comparable to the Academy Awards in entertainment and the Olympics in athletics.

Anatalia will attend the Genee competition on a scholarship granted by the Royal Academy of Dance, a process she initiated independently in order to fulfill her dream without financially burdening her family. This is not a story about a privileged girl getting everything she wants. Anatalia is from a typical middle class Santa Clarita family that works hard for what they have, and she is the perfect, inspirational example of a hometown girl going big. Really big.
