- By Tyler McGee

Canyon’s Markeill Taylor sat out last week’s game. But when the Canyon senior running back/defensive back returned to the field Friday night, he made an instant impact.

Taylor led the way with an interception and three rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys in their 33-14 win over Eastside of Lancaster at Canyon High – the Cowboys’ first win of the year.

“It’s a dynamic performance, and he’s a gamebreaker,” said Canyon head coach Rich Gutierrez of Taylor.

Taylor scored on rushes of 51, 11 and 52 yards for a total of 181 yards on nine carries. He also made his presence felt on special teams, opening the second half with a 45-yard kickoff return.

The host Cowboys came into the game 0-2 on the season with losses to highly-ranked Calabasas and Thousand Oaks.

Cowboys quarterback Miles Fallin went 6-of-16 passing for 104 yards with

an interception on Friday.

He spread the ball around, completing passes to six different receivers. He also scrambled for 19 yards.

Senior linebacker Travis Clarke, who had seven solo tackles and seven assists, led Canyon defensively. Senior defensive lineman Marcus Adams added a sack for the Cowboys.

Henry Arellano and his pair of 4-yard rushing touchdowns also bolstered the Cowboys’ offense.

Eastside running back Niamke Guilford ran for 56 yards on 20 carries. And Cameron Smith added 75 yards on 11 carries for the Lions.

Canyon led 20-0 at halftime and 27-0 heading to the fourth quarter. Late turnovers helped the visiting Lions (1-2) to 14 unanswered points.

After the win, Canyon will hit the road to play Burbank High next Thursday.
