Mary Elizabeth Sheldon

1929-2016

Mary Elizabeth Sheldon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 after several health issues over the past couple of months. She was born on June 15, 1929 to Marion and Harold Sheldon in Crestwood, NY.

When both of her older brothers, John and Sam, went into the service Mary attended high school at Saint Mary’s in Minnesota where her mother was a biology teacher. After high school Mary moved to her mother’s family home in historic Wheaton, IL. Soon after, Mary moved to Chicago where she met who would turn out to be her lifelong friend, Marlene Mensch, playing volleyball at the YWCA. As the years passed, marriages and divorces happened, Mary and Marlene realized what great friends they were and moved into Mary’s mother’s home in Wheaton ~ Mary and her son, Thomas, and Marlene with her two children, Kathleen and Mark.

Mary earned her Bachelor of Science degree at North Central College in nearby Naperville, IL. She held several jobs over the years including working at the Du Page County Court House doing payroll. She enjoyed performing in muVLFDOV VXFK DV 6RXWK 3DFL¿F DQG *X\V and Dolls with the Wheaton Drama Club. Always wanting to keep busy, she enjoyed jujitsu, archery, and walking with the Happy Hoofers. She also traveled to Jamaica, England, and attended three World’s Fairs.

In 1997, after Mary and Marlene both retired, they decided to move to Newhall, CA where Mary’s son Thomas and wife Peggy had a newborn son, Trevor, Mary’s only grandchild. They moved into Valley Oaks Village apartment that overlooked the dog park and have happily been there for 18 years. Some of Mary’s favorite things to do were when she sang with the Sweet Adelaide’s and faithfully enjoyed watching the men’s barbershop singers rehearse in the Valley Oak’s Clubhouse.

She is survived by her older brother John Sheldon, son Thomas Sheldon, daughter-in-law Peggy Sheldon, and grandson Trevor Sheldon. She will be greatly missed.

There will be a Celebration of Life service from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Valley Oaks Village Clubhouse, 24700 Valley St, Newhall, CA 91321.
