Iused to wonder what empty nesting would feel like. We’re not quite there yet, but I already know we aren’t going to like it much. When our firstborn moved out over a year ago, I was a nervous wreck. I was constantly thinking if she got home safely from work, or will she be safe when she goes out? Is she eating?

After a few months, things got better. I fell into a routine. I would send her a goodnight text and she would respond. And she would usually text me some time during the day.

Our youngest is still at home. Right after college, he landed a good position with a local company and is working fulltime. He says he will move out within the next couple of years, but am I really ready?

Because of college, many kids leave home and move out. And many return after graduation. Why? Because kids these days can’t afford to live on their own. Rents are astronomical, especially here in Santa Clarita.

Once my boy leaves, then what? Just my hubby and I. I’ll have to learn to like sports if I want to see my husband at all, and he will have to put up with a romantic comedy or two. At least we won’t have to downsize. We never up-sized!

The dishwasher will stay quiet and unused, and the washing machine will see one load a week is what I’m guessing. Hopefully, the kids will come back home on Sundays and we can sit down together around my big table and have a big meal. Then off they go and the quiet will once again set in.

No, forget it. Not quite ready for that. But then again … Maybe?
