A rocky start

Debut turns sour for Devereaux, team

-

Running back Brian Devereaux had to wait an entire football season before getting into a game.

But on Friday night against Moorpark, the St. Genevieve transfer touched the ball on the very first play of Canyon’s very first drive in a 42-21 loss to Moorpark.

“He’s a great running back,” coach Rich Gutierrez said. “Plays defense too. He’s a great kid. To see him actually out there, he’s been out here for quite some time, but to get him on the field was special.”

Devereaux’s longest gain of the night was 19 yards. He ended the evening with 63 yards.

He could have gone for more, but his first-game glory ended early when he was ejected with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter due to a targeting call.

It was up to Henry Arellano, who splits time with Devereaux at running back, to pick up the slack.

And he did just that, totaling 60 yards and three touchdowns on the evening.

When Devereaux or Arellano didn’t get the ball, quarterback Miles Fallin, who finished the night with 184 passing yards, was faking a handoff to one of them.

“Once we noticed that the ground game was working really well, we just faked handoffs and that really opens up everything,” Arellano said.

“The ground game really opens up the passing game and the passing game opens up the ground game,” he said. “They have to work together. I was lucky enough to have success on the ground today and I opened up Miles.”

The Cowboys (0-1) had trouble making reads when it came to defense. Quarterback Tyger Goslin, a Navy commit, connected with a plethora of open targets across the evening.

Goslin went 20 for 23 on the evening with 269 total passing yards.

However, defensive end Cole Manclow was able to get to the throat of the Musketeer (1-0) offense, sacking Goslin multiple times.

“Keeping that outside contained, he’s a quick quarterback,” Manclow said. “He’s pretty quick and shifty, so if I kept the outside contained, I was pretty set and could make the tackle.”

The Cowboys will be back again next Friday.

“He played stellar,” Arellano said. “He’s one of those players who would play his heart out. He plays 100 percent every play. He never gives up. That’s really what Cowboy football is and I think he really fits well here.”
