Anti-bullying camp scheduled for students
Quest Toastmasters, the Toastmasters of Santa Clarita, will host an anti-bullying camp Sept. 29 to provide tips to prevent bullying, lessons to build confidence and ways to spot warning signs.
“We really just wanted to each out to community and let them know they have resources and let them what to do when they expect there is bullying,” Quest Toastmaster speaker Michelle Tandoc-Pichereau said. “We know that besides drugs, one of the growing issues in Santa Clarita schools is bullying, especially cyberbullying.”
According to a 2015 report from the National Center for Educational Statistics, one in four students have experience bullying in school. The report noted that this does not include the number of bullying incidents that went under the radar.
The event will feature speakers Sgt. Tim Vander Leek and sheriff’s Deputy Tom Drake with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and speakers from Quest Toastmasters. TandocPichereau said the event will be a mix of speeches and interactive exchanges aimed at building teen’s confidence and preventing bullying.
“We wanted to do something that would be of service,” Tandoc-Pichereau said. “We really want to raise awareness about the issue.”
The Anti-Bullying Confidence Boost Camp will be held Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Valencia Public Library.
