Last Thursday, The Master’s University battled to a scoreless double-overtime draw against the UC Merced Bobcats on the campus of Menlo College in Atherton.

Of TMU’s 13 shots and eight shots on goal, Sierra Carrasco (Riverside, CA) paced the Mustangs’ offense with three shots and two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jessica Zubia

anchored TMU’s defense by grabbing four saves over 110 minutes.

Two days later, the Lady Mustangs upended No. 23 Carroll College 2-1, and improved their record to 1-1-1.

TMU got on the board two minutes and 31 seconds into play after Michaela Rickard scored on a penalty kick.

At the 55:55 mark, the Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 after a goal from Hailey Gomillion. Kayla Peterson was credited with the assist.

Carroll managed to score at the 80:33 mark when Payton Netz capitalized on an assist from Alison Zimmerman.

But TMU’s stingy defense kept the Saints quiet in the final 10 minutes of play, securing its first win of the 2016 campaign.

Attesting to the tight contest, both teams posted four shots and four shots on goal. Zubia tallied three saves.

This weekend, TMU travels to Prescott, Ariz., for a tournament hosted by EmbryRiddle University. On Saturday, the Mustangs will square off against receiving-votes MidAmerica Nazarene (KS) at 7:00 p.m., and then play No. 24 Embry-Riddle on Monday at 10:00 a.m.

Men’s Soccer

Last Thursday, The Master’s University men’s soccer team scored early goals to beat Westminster of Utah 2-0 in the season opener.

Freshman Luis Garcia-Sosa took a pass from Humphrey Mahowa 3:52 into play and launched a shot past Griffin keeper Sean Lyne and into the far side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Just under ten minutes later (13:21), Mahowa was on the scoring end, capitalizing on a Lyne mistake to double the Mustangs’ advantage. Hanging around the Griffin goalie, who tried to make a move on him, Mahowa swiped the ball and tapped it in for one of the easiest goals of his two-plus seasons in the blue and gold and a 2-0 lead.

That was the extent of the Mustang offense, and it proved to be enough for the remaining 76-plus minutes as the new-look defense played superbly in shutting out the Griffins.

However, on Saturday, things didn’t go the way the Mustangs had hoped. Rodrigo Portillo’s second goal of the match just over four minutes into overtime snapped a 2-2 tie to lift Carroll of Montana past The Master’s University 3-2.

TMU looks to improve on its 1-1 record when it opens its home schedule against the University of Antelope Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Reese Field.

Volleyball

The Master’s University volleyball team improved its record to 4-2 after beating the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls in three sets (25-19, 26-24, 25-16) last Saturday afternoon on Bross Court.

The Lady Mustangs remain undefeated on Bross Court (2-0).

Aubrey Pyburn finished the afternoon with 16 kills, while Morgan Koch and Emily Curtin each tallied 11 kills. Kayla Sims finished Saturday’s match with 40 assists.

Collectively, the Mustangs claimed 50 kills, 44 assists, 29 digs, and a 0.396 attack percentage.

This weekend, the Mustangs will travel to Fullerton for the Hope International Labor Day Tournament. On Friday, the Mustangs will take on receiving-votes Lewis-Clark State (ID) at noon, followed by a 4:00 p.m. match against La Sierra University. The next day, TMU will play UC Merced at noon and Carroll (MT) at 4:00 p.m. Cross Country: Last week, The Master’s University women’s cross country team received a No. 5 national ranking on the NAIA Women’s Cross Country Coaches’ Top 25 Preseason Poll. TMU’s men’s team ranks seventh on its respective poll.

This Saturday, both teams will compete at the 2016 Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea. The men’s 8k will begin at 8:30 a.m., while the women’s 5k starts at 9:15 a.m.
