LA deputy is 2nd to die on duty

COMPTON (AP) — For the second time this month the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is mourning a veteran sergeant who died on duty.

The department says

Sgt. Alfonso Lopez was pronounced dead after his patrol car was found crashed into a fence in Compton.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. Monday after Lopez responded to assist other deputies involved in a pursuit that ended up being called off due to rainy weather.

Other deputies performed CPR but the sergeant was still unconscious

and unresponsive when Compton firefighters arrived.

Early this month a Palmdale station sergeant, Steve Owen, was shot to death as he answered a burglary call.

Rain showers Southern California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tropical moisture streaming across Southern California has

brought showers, lightning and some downpours to the region.

Scattered power outages affecting several thousand customers are reported Monday morning, mostly in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The National Weather Service said the showers and thunderstorms continued through the afternoon as a weak lowpressure trough moved through.
