The summit will include a general informational session about the district’s achievement to date and construction programs, said Paul Cordeiro, superintendent of schools for the Newhall District.

After, parents will have the opportunity to choose from three to five breakout sessions about “signature district programs.”

These breakout sessions will discuss mathematics instructional materials, science instruction under the Next Generation Science Standards, art and music instruction, the NSD Coherent Writing Program and physical education efforts.

The Next Generation Science Standards, which include a heavy emphasis in engineering and problem-solving, are already being implemented at Newhall schools to prepare students for next year’s standardized tests.

“The board has had the foresight to lay the groundwork for a successful program,” Cordeiro said. “Every school has dedicated science lab staffed by Teachers on Special Assignment.”

Overall the goal of the summit is to inform parents of the best ways to bolster students’ success and be involved in their children’s education.

The 2016 Parent Summit is free for all attendees. It will include a box dinner, childcare and translation services.
