Today is Friday, June 30, the 181st day of 2017 and the 11th day of summer.

On this date in the SCV: In 1944, The Signal reported another skull and skeleton mystery, this time not connected with the San Francisquito dam disaster, had come to light when the remains of some unknown man were found in a steep canyon creek bed on the Herwick Oil Lease a mile west of U.S. 6. The find was reported by Edwin James and Paul Pustmueller, oil scouts for the Shell Company. They came across the top of a skull protruding from the bed of the creek and notified the Sheriff’s Station. Deputies Shannon and Hammond went to the scene and by dint of careful digging and scraping accumulated most of the bones of a human skeleton. Along with the bones they found a startling assortment of other things, including an Ingersoll watch, a pocket knife, a spoon, a file, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, a pair of pliers, eight eyeglass lenses, a sack full of colored beads, a man’s pipe, a piece of carpenter’s chalk, several lead dress weights, a key ring, a buttonhook, and a tin box containing scraps of paper and more colored beads.
