An early morning crash near Acton that claimed the life of an infant girl also claimed the life of an 8-year-old child later in the day.

“One of the eight year olds succumbed to the injuries earlier today,” California Highway Patrol Officer Josh Greengard told The Signal. The second child died mid-afternoon, he said. The deceased girl, identified as one year old, was killed in a vehicle crash near Acton Thursday morning after an SUV left Highway 14, hit an embankment, flipped and ejected one of four children in the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Karen Adams, 37, of Los

Angeles, suffered major injuries in the crash.

The three surviving children – all boys, two aged 8 and one 14-year-old – each suffered major injuries. One of the eight-year-olds died Thursday afternoon.

The woman, the infant girl whose age was one-year-old and the teen were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital.

The two eight-year-old boys were taken to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“On July 20th, at approximately 0620 hours CHP began getting calls of a solo vehicle rollover collision on northbound State Route 14, south of Ward Road in the unincorporated community of Acton at 0621 hours,” California Highway Patrol Officer Josh Greengard said this morning in a news release.

“For reasons being investigated,” the driver of a Black Chevrolet Trailblazer, identified by CHP as Adams, allowed the SUV to veer to the right, colliding with the dirt embankment, causing it to overturn several times.

“One of the juveniles was ejected from the vehicle to which was an infant,” Greengard said.

All northbound lanes were closed shortly before 7 a.m. to allow for the landing of two Los Angeles County Fire Department rescue helicopters.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m. Thursday, the carpool lane and the lane next to it were opened.

Alcohol (and/or) drugs is being investigated in this collision, Greengard said.
