The Signal

Eliminate welfare queens of all stripes

-

I am inspired and thrilled to read Tuesday’s Signal! This community is fortunate to have the writing and clear historical thinking of Joshua Heath!

He has graced the pages of The Signal before, but this time I can’t resist a response. There are welfare queens on both ends of the income spectrum, but it is most disgusting to see it among those who have benefited so much from society.

My gardener and I had a discussion about the corruption everywhere leading to an overwhelming negativity as he cited people who were lazy and drew public assistance.

He also recited a story of his experience with a near-fatal tumor that his wife has just had removed. He described six months of trouble they had gone through with insurance companies before she was treated.

Finally, there was a glimmer of happiness as her tumor was benign and she will recover. Clearly, we need Medicare for All, just as we must have quality education for all.

As a historian, I am pleased with Joshua reminding us that we once had a government that took its responsibility toward its people seriously. Both in education and health care, it’s time for our society to accept its charge to put our money where it counts.

While we need to stop “welfare queens” of all stripes, let us remember that there are many more caring people who are working to create a loving society. We must join together with the confidence that we can turn greed and negativity around.

Bravo, Joshua!
