Golf: SCV duo needs to score below par today for shot at moving on
Both Santa Clarita Valley residents competing in the U.S. Amateur this week have ground to make up if they hope to advance past today’s stroke play.
The SCV’s Corby Segal shot a 6-over 76 on Monday at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Golden Valley High graduate Jonathan Kang shot a 9-over 79 at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
The scores tied them for 183rd and 262nd, respectively.
The top 64 golfers advance to Wednesday’s match play. Today, each golfer will play the course he didn’t play Monday.
“I definitely left a few out there today,” Segal said. “I haven’t been playing much tournament golf in a while. I’ve been working a lot (as a caddie on the PGA Tour). But it was definitely fun to be out there playing Riviera near my home in Southern California.”
Segal’s opening-round highlights at Riviera came on the fifth and 15th holes, where he dropped two birdies.
He bogeyed holes two, seven, nine, 10, 17 and 18.
Kang, who will be a sophomore at UC Irvine this fall, shot his lone birdie on hole No. 5. He bogeyed holes two, eight, nine, 13, 16 and 18.
Norman Xiong of San Diego, Hayden Wood of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Mark Lawrence Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, currently lead the field at
6-under.
Arthur Griffin of Lake Placid, New York, is fourth at 4-under.
Kang is scheduled to tee off at 12:15 p.m. today, playing Riviera with Shae Wools-Cobb of Great Britain and Andrew Israelson of Staples, Minnesota.
Segal will tee off at the same time, playing Bel Air with Jack Singh Brar of England and Kyle McClatchie of South Africa.
“Hopefully I’ll get a good start and go from there,” Segal said. “I know I have to shoot two or three under par to have a chance. (I need to) get one early and just grind it out.”
