Nighttime burglary ‘suppression patrol’ results in one arrest

Deputies on the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Suppression Patrol Team conducted their fifth operation Sunday night in response to commercial business window smash burglaries.

Sgt. Chris Maurizi, the Burglary Team and sheriff’s deputies patrolled areas throughout the Santa Clarita in an attempt to stop nighttime, window smash burglaries. The patrols and suppression operation resulted in one arrest.

Deputies arrested a white male for possession of Identify Theft materials, according to Public Information Officer for Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Shirley Miller.

“The suspect has a prior burglary conviction and was found casing the area of Rye Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road,” Miller said in an email. “All local businesses were checked and no burglaries were discovered.”

Deputies also conducted patrol checks throughout Canyon Country and Newhall, but no burglaries or suspicious activity were noted, according to Miller.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Capt. Robert Lewis initiated the suppression after taking the captain’s position about six months ago. The first suppression patrol began in May, which resulted in three arrests.

The patrols continued throughout the summer that netted several arrests, disrupted burglaries in progress, targeted “transient areas” of SCV and seized dangerous weapons.

The idea behind the “suppression patrol” strategy was to identify areas showing a higher incidence of crime and then to dispatch a team of patrol deputies to concentrate on those areas.
