Girls golf: West Ranch golfer chooses UCLA
Ever since she was about nine years old, West Ranch golfer Zoe Campos knew exactly where she wanted to go to college.
She wanted to do as her golf mentor, Valencia High grad and current LPGA golfer Alison Lee did and go to UCLA.
On Thursday, she made that goal a
reality. Shortly after beginning her freshman year at West Ranch, Campos committed to UCLA to play golf.
“It’s just like, a good feeling since I’ve already got it out of the way and I just really have to focus on getting good grades and playing good golf,” Campos said.
She took one unofficial visit in December, which was all it took for her to solidify her decision.
This summer, Campos played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Chula Vista and advanced through the Round of 32 before falling in match play 7 and 6 to Sophia Schubert of Tennessee.
Campos had planned to play at the Alison Lee Championship at Valencia Country Club in search of a second consecutive tournament title, but Lee convinced Campos to take on the U.S. Women’s Amateur instead.
“When I started playing golf, and when I joined Valencia country club, (Lee has) always been there and I always practice with her and she’s always giving me great advice,” said Campos.
Campos will begin Foothill League play today as the No. 1 golfer for the Wildcats. She said that she appreciates the dynamic of a team atmosphere, something she’s never experienced before.
“It’s really fun just being with a team,” she said. “All those van rides and you just have a lot of laughs with them. Playing with a team is something you’ve never really expected since it’s an individual sport.”
