Today is Thursday, October 5, the 278th day of 2017 and the 14th day of autumn.

On this date in the SCV: In 1933, The Signal reported that an earthquake of no small proportions struck southern California a little after midnight. Dishes were rattled, sleeping folks were awakened, and for a time it was feared that extensive damage had been done. The greatest damage was in the Los Angeles older section, where falling brick cornices and walls dropped to the sidewalk. In Newhall, the movement seemed to be about three or four inches to the northwest, and then back. The big shock was preceded by several tremblings, but no damage was reported. The public schools were almost all closed until the damage to the buildings could be ascertained.
