The Signal

Today in history

-

Today is Saturday, October 7, the 280th day of 2017 and the 16th day of autumn.

On this date in the SCV: In 1988, The Signal reported that rigid slow growth policies implemented in Southern California might cause widespread unemployment and a massive housing crunch, according to a study done by the USC’s School of Urban and Regional Planning. People in booming suburbs like the SCV noticed that they were “in an area of great housing growth and they react by tightening controls — a perfectly decent instinct,” planning school dean Alan Kreditor said in presenting the draft report to the Southern California Association of Governments. “But the tendency for jobs and housing to seek balance gets distorted,” he added, and the result would be housing that the poor cannot afford and a doubling of unemployment. Hoping to find a reasonable plan to deal with an expected influx of 3.1 million people into the Los Angeles metropolitan region, SCAG had undertaken writing the “’growth management plan” a year and a half before. SCAG asked USC’s School of Urban and Regional Planning to do the study and provide an independent assessment of the effects of slow growth policies to the year 2010. Today’s Highlights in History:
