Local woman arrested for vehicular manslaughter
A 21-year-old Canyon Country woman was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence Wednesday, for allegedly killing a Saugus mother of six two weeks ago in a head-on traffic collision.
News of the arrest came on the day the Evans family drove to Utah to bury Katie Evans.
Alexia Cina was arrested Wednesday after traffic investigators with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station obtained the results of toxicology tests which allegedly reveal she had a blood alcohol content of .21 at the time of the crash.
The legal blood/alcohol limit is .08.
Katie Snyder Evans, 37, of Saugus, was killed on the night of Oct. 6, in a two-vehicle collision that happened shortly before midnight on Golden Valley Road, just south of Valley Center Drive.
A vehicle traveling south on Golden Valley Road crossed the center median and collided head-on into a car traveling northbound, Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the SCV Sheriff’s Station said.
News of the arrest came on the day the Evans family drove to Utah to bury Katie Evans.
Evans husband, Jacob, told The Signal Wednesday that he is trying to concentrate on his family at the moment.
“Obviously, there are consequences when things happen,” he said. “But I don’t wish any more ill on anyone.
“I am trying to focus on my family,” he said. “I’m trying to help my family heal.
“We left this morning to bury my wife,” Evans said, noting that burial is slated for Friday.
Jacob and Katie – now just Jacob – had six children, each with their own character and their own needs. They are Spencer (12), Travis (11), Nathaniel (9), Gideon (2) and twin newborn girls Hannah and Sarah, each just 10 weeks old.
In a news release issued Wednesday, Santa Clarita Valley Station traffic investigators responding to the Oct. 6 crash determined early on that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the collision.
Toxicology reports from the driver, Alexia Cina, age 21, of Canyon Country, revealed
she had a blood alcohol content of .21, Miller said in the news release.
On Wednesday, Cina was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with her bail set at $200,000.
At the time of the fatal crash, Evans was about a mile from her home, returning from a visit with her premature twins in the hospital, according to Natalie Mortensen who set a fundraising page for the Evans family online.
Evans couldn’t go a day without visiting her new twins at the hospital, according to Mortensen.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $308,000 had been raised for the Evans family.
In an interview with The Signal last week, Jacob Evans said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love demonstrated by the people in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“The public is offering so much already,” he said last week.
“It is a huge wonderful blessing that we have such a wonderful community. We’re struggling just to sort through the offers (of help) that we’ve had.”
