Today in history
Today is Saturday, October 28, the 301st day of 2017 and the 37th day of autumn.
On this date in the SCV: In 1948, The Signal reported that curfew would be at 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday for all kids under 18. That was the order coming from Captain Ambrose Stewart at the Sheriff Station on the first Sunday night Hallowe’en in seven years. On all other years, school carnivals and supervised parties had soaked up most of the Hallowe’en energy. This year all of the Hallowe’en carnivals and affairs were to take place Friday and Saturday nights, leaving Sunday night with Hallowe’eners in the sad position of’ being all dressed up and no place to go. So an augmented force of deputy sheriffs would be on duty Friday and Saturday nights for Hallowe’en stragglers and kids who thought carnivals were sissy. On Sunday night there would be a special alert for all officers. On all three nights kids under 18 who were found on the streets (or in the alleys) might have gotten a free ride in Mister Biscailuz’s hustle buggy. The Parent-Teacher Associations of all of the schools were making special preparations for Hallowe’en festivities.
