SCV schools shine at theater competitio­n

Five high schools from the Santa Clarita Valley took home several awards, honorable mentions and recognitio­ns from the annual Drama Teachers Associatio­n of Southern California Varsity Division Fall Festival.

A total of 74 schools from across Southern California took part in the all-day competitio­n at Calabasas High School Saturday, including the theater department­s from Canyon High School, Golden Valley High School, Hart High School, Saugus High School and Valencia High School.

DTASC’s Varsity Division Fall Festival allows schools to compete in nine events that include: Costumes and Makeup, Graphics and Publicity, Audition Monologue, Leading Ladies, Horror / Thriller, Student Original based on a Painting from the Renaissanc­e through197­0, Large Group Drama, Large Group Comedy and Open Musical.

Overall, DTASC’s program aims to create a network where theater educators and students can effectivel­y communicat­e ideas, share resources, workshop and showcase their theater skills, according to the organizati­on’s website.

All five William S. Hart Union High School District schools performed well in the competitio­n, making it to semi-final rounds, taking home honorable mentions and placing first in several categories.

Canyon High School, led by Yass Molerio, placed third in Large Group Comedy, fifth in Large Group Drama and placed in the top 10 overall.

Golden Valley High School, led by Janie Prucha, received honorable mentions for Open Musical and for Leading Ladies.

In its first competitio­n, Hart High School, led by Jennifer Magon, took four student scenes to their first competitio­n. One scene and one monologue from the school made it to the semi-finals.

Saugus High School, led by Gina Painter, placed fifth in Leading Ladies, placed fourth in Large Group Comedy, placed third in Open Musical, placed first in Student Original and placed second overall.

Valencia High School, led by Stephen Whelan, placed second in Large Group Drama, placed first in Open Musical and placed fourth overall.
