A surge of adrenaline

Prep v-ball: Hart sweeps Wilson; Saugus falls to Moorpark; SCCS gets clean win

When Shelby Grubbs broke the record for career blocks and blocks in a season in Hart’s home sweep of Woodrow Wilson of Long Beach, she knew it.

“I started cheering mid-rally … it was like a surge of adrenaline,” Grubbs, who had seven blocks on the night for a total of 133 career blocks said.

Makenna Fall had a similar experience when she broke the career and season record for digs. She had 24 digs on Tuesday for 519 career digs.

“It was a big goal for me since freshman year and breaking a record is like, leaving a mark,” Fall said.

It was a pretty good way to start the CIFSouthern Section Division 2 tournament for the Foothill League co-champions.

The Indians had garnered an 8-4 lead by the time the first time out was taken in

Game 1 and held on to a comfortable lead for the remainder of the frame. Ashley Cosey executed back-to-back kills to end the game at 25-19.

An ace set the tone for the Indians in the second game. Again, the Bruins would fail to capture a lead at any point in the game. They did, however, manage to keep Hart at 24 points while scoring six of their own after Kyle Mattson was replaced with Allison Witherspoon at setter.

Delaney Gibbs broke through with a kill for a 25-21 win.

“I think that it was just a rough patch and with a new setter in the game for the second round, we had to adjust a little bit, but she’s a great setter,” Gibbs said. “We played with her really well and I think that it was just mind things.”

Wilson brought more resistance in the third game, securing a lead for the first time all night early in the game. To make matters worse for the Indians, offensive powerhouse Ashley Cosey exited the game with an ankle injury.

But instead of succumbing to the pressure of having two key players out, Hart rallied and continued to a 2522 win for the sweep.

“We just kind of had to focus on what was happening on the court and just know that we love her and our sport is always with her, but just to focus on what we can control right now,” said Grubbs.

The Indians will next play at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Moorpark 3, Saugus 1

The Centurions fell to Moorpark in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 tournament at Moorpark. Game scores were 25-23, 26-28, 17-25, 26-28.

Caitlin Liebe led the team with 23 kills. Kayla Tait had 11 kills and 13 digs and Holly Piroli had 19 digs.

Saugus ends the season 16-13 overall.

SCCS 3, San Jacinto 0

In the first round of the CIF-SS Division 9 tournament, Santa Clarita Christian School swept San Jacinto Valley Academy 25-17, 2519, 25-16. Megan Dombrowski had five aces and 22 assists. Kalona Marr added 12 kills.

SCCS next plays University Prep of Victorville on Thursday at 7 p.m.
