Oregon man arrested for suspicion of importing pot

Around 10 pounds of marijuana seized by SCV sheriff’s deputies

The Park and Ride in Newhall looked a lot more like Pot-and-Ride this past week when deputies arrested an Oregon man suspected of bringing about 10 pounds of marijuana into California.

Danny Lopez, 39, of Forrest Grove, Oregon, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday on suspicion of sale and transport of more than 28.5 grams — one ounce — of marijuana into the state, a felony.

On Tuesday, around 3 a.m., one of our deputies was conducting patrol checks at a “Park and Ride” located near Newhall Avenue and Highway 14, Shirley Miller of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

“The deputy observed a van that appeared to have an adult male inside,” she said.

“When she (the deputy) approached the van to check on the welfare of the individual, the deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle.

“She found approximately 10 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle, and the suspect was found to be in possession of over $3,000 in U.S. currency,” Miller said.

Lopez was arrested on suspicion of importing marijuana into the state and for the unlawful possession of cannabis for sales.

He was taken into custody with bail set at $20,000.

According to arrest records, however, Lopez posted bail about 13 hours after his arrest and was released from custody.
