The Signal

Today in history

-

Today is Tuesday, November 21, the 325th day of 2017 and the 61st day of autumn.

On this date in the SCV: In 1929, The Signal reported that November 17th set the beginning date for the eleventh annual Book Week, which each year provided the opportunity for calling attention to the importance of a growing home library of standard books for every child. Never before had adults seemed more keenly aware of the importance of instilling a love of good books in our boys and girls. The sincere effort on the part of the majority of the publishing houses to produce ever better and more attractive Juvenile books; the unflinching seal of librarians all over the country to create an appetite for the most worthwhile literature; the earnest endeavor of women’s organizations to make a serious study of the best reading material for the mind of the growing child, bear testimony to this fact. As a firm believer in the movement, the Los Angeles County Free library with its numerous branches wished to add its voice to others who had as their goal, more and better books in the home.
