Santa Clarita Valley residents ‘Light up Main Street’
Santa Claus pays a visit to Main Street in Newhall during the “Light Up Main Street” event on Saturday. Downtown Newhall was transformed into a blizzardy, winter wonderland as the City of Santa Clarita kicked off this year’s holiday season.
Despite daily highs that have skirted around the 80-degree mark over the past few days, Downtown Newhall was transformed into a blizzardy, winter wonderland as the city kicked off this year’s holiday season at their annual Light Up Main Street event.
Residents began to inundate Main Street, as well as portions of Lyons Avenue and Market Street in Newhall, starting around 2 p.m. for the first portion of the day’s festivities: the “Sip ‘n’ Shop.’”
During the Sip ‘n’ Shop, attendees meandered through the many familyowned business that line Main Street. Many of these same establishments provided complimentary beverages and snacks to the event-goers, said Mayor Cameron Smyth in a press release.
As the sun sank lower across the horizon, more residents began to trickle into Newhall.
Here they were treated to a wide variety of booths sponsored by local vendors and were able to take photos with Santa Claus - all the proceeds from these photos were donated to the Santa Clarita Boys and Girls Club.
By 6 p.m. hundreds of residents had gathered beneath the steps of the Newhall Library to enjoy the Christmas music emanating from a makeshift stage placed across Lyons Avenue, and to get their seats to see hundreds of LED lights strung through this year’s 23-foot-tall Christmas tree come to life.
Local musicians and school choirs serenaded the crowd with Christmas carols until the clock struck 7 p.m. - at which time the tree was illuminated to the roar of the crowd.
