City’s Family Literacy Festival invites community to ‘Create Your World’

The Santa Clarita Public Library and College of

the Canyons MakerSpace are partnering to bring a special blend of resources to the community that inspire creativity and will be hosting this year’s 11th Annual Family Literacy Festival themed “Create Your World.” This FREE event will take place on Saturday, December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library located at 24500 Main Street.

The festival will commence

with a special story reading at 10:30 a.m. by Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth and Assemblyma­n Dante Acosta in the Old Town Newhall Community Room. Attendees will also enjoy a dance performanc­e from the Kalakeke Pacific Island Dance Company.

The College of the Canyons MakerSpace team will be on site to educate and encourage attendees to explore new ways to create through hands-on activities, including a demo of a digital planetariu­m.

Other local students, teachers, artists and education enthusiast­s will be partnering to host stations focused on the theme of “Create Your World.” Young children will enjoy lei-making, building and creation stations. There will be plenty of exciting activities for teens too, including the opportunit­y to demonstrat­e the library’s new virtual reality system.

A free commemorat­ive holiday ornament created by College of the Canyons MakerSpace will be given away to each family while supplies last.
