Deputy rescues pit bull pups in Canyon Country
Dogs taken to animal shelter in Castaic to see if they are able to be adopted
Two pit bulls that “escaped” from their rightful owner and were scooped up by a sheriff’s deputy concerned for their safety are now at the Castaic Animal Shelter waiting for a new owner.
Karen Stepp, of the Castaic Animal Shelter, told The Signal on Thursday that she is watching both animals closely to ascertain whether or not they’re safe for adoption.
The two dogs, one male and one female, were found roaming the streets Wednesday, near Flowerpark Drive, on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country.
That’s when Deputy Wendy Solares rounded them up and got them in the back of her cruiser, Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.
Miller posted a photo of two pit bull “pups” on the SCV Sheriff’s Station’s Facebook page Thursday hoping someone would recognized the pair.
The notice reads: “Do you recognize theses dogs?”
“She transported them in the back of her patrol car... to the station,” Miller wrote, about the deputy who rescued them. “They appear to be in good condition.”
The dogs were thirsty but appeared to have been fed, Miller said Thursday.
“They didn’t have any collars or tags,” she said. “Residents in the area were afraid they were going to get bitten.”
Once back at the SCV Sheriff’s Station, (Deputy) Solares got in touch with officers of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control who took them to the shelter in Castaic.
Although they would not elaborate, authorities told The Signal the dogs wouldn’t be returned to their owner.
Asked if deputies suspect the owner set the dogs free because they were dangerous, Miller said: “That would be a terrible thing to do.”
She offered as alternative: “Maybe they went on an adventure.”
If so, the next adventure for the “bonded dogs”—meaning one dog goes where the other goes—is adoption.
“They’ll go through the normal adopting process,” Stepp said. “We want them to be placed in a safe environment.”
