Making progress on issues doesn’t need to be partisan

- Joshua HEATH Joshua Heath is a Valencia resident and a political science student at UCLA. He has served two terms as a delegate to the California Democratic Party. He is a columnist for CA25UP.

It is common knowledge that our country is more divided than ever. Hot-button issues ranging from abortion to gun control to immigration have set neighbor against neighbor and friend against friend.

The “mystic chords of memory”—to borrow Abraham Lincoln’s imperishable phrase—that bind us together as Americans have been rusting for decades, worn down by a politics consumed by selfishness, incivility and revenge.

We at CA25 United For Progress believe another reality is possible. As an organization of dedicated activists, we start from the premise that the desire to make the world better is not exclusively Republican or Democratic; it rests inside of all of us.

Every decent human being, no matter their politics, is disgusted by poverty, hunger, illness and other injustices and wishes something could be done to solve them.

That is why we have made our organization a home for citizens of all stripes. The only qualification for joining us at our meetings and public events is a desire to serve and be a force for good in the community. Since our founding over a year ago, this has proven to be a powerful formula, as our membership contains citizens of all political beliefs, races, ages and religions.

CA25UP’s driving mission is simple: to find the best policies and programs for the 25th Congressional District and do all we can to turn those ideas into law. Sometimes this means supporting or opposing a particular political candidate; often it is about raising awareness in the community.

When deciding whether to fight for a piece of legislation, CA25UP asks a very simple question: does this represent the best of America?

That’s why we’ve come out for ideas like debt-free college. In today’s knowledge economy, young people cannot get ahead unless they have the skills required to do the complex jobs of tomorrow. A high school degree alone is no longer a ticket to the middle class.

Kids need more schooling, and they shouldn’t be crippled by debt for making the responsible choice to advance their education.

And, geopolitically, the United States will not keep up with China, Russia or the other great powers unless we have an educated workforce that can outinnovate the world. Allowing our children to go to school at an affordable price will ensure U.S. national security in the years to come.

If you want to join a group of passionate citizens fighting for ideas like these, who are motivated by a love of country, community and their neighbors, visit our website ca25up.org where you will find information on upcoming events and ways to get involved.

There’s so much work to be done, and we’d love to have you fighting by our side.
