Brown Behaving Badly?
California’s petulant Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown had some very strong words for U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice this week.
He and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra are named as defendants in the DOJ’s lawsuit, as announced last Wednesday.
Sessions says several of the state’s new “sanctuary” laws are preventing federal immigration officers from “doing their jobs.”
Brown heatedly responded that Sessions lied about the state’s actions and motives He insisted that the federal government’s motion was a “political stunt” and pretty much an act of war against California.
The federal AG never mentioned Governor Brown by name, but he criticized California lawmakers and Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom (a leftist Democrat running for Governor) and Becerra for what he called a “radical open borders agenda.”
He went on to urge the state to “Stop protecting lawbreakers and giving all officers more dangerous work to do so that a few politicians can score political points on the backs of officer safety.”
Sessions’ suit against California alleges the focused “sanctuary state” laws, passed by the 2017 Democratdominated legislature, obstructs federal immigration enforcement. It specifically seeks to have three laws nullified.
S.B. 54 prohibits state and local officials from sharing information with federal immigration officials and also bars the transfer of certain immigrants into federal custody.
A.B. 450 makes it illegal for private employers to cooperate with the federal government regarding immigration enforcement at the workplace.
A.B. 103 attempts to regulate detention facilities used by the federal government to hold immigration prisoners.
Brown concluded his public reaction by saying “The [U.S.] attorney general has basically thrown the gauntlet down and done it in a highly politicized way.” He claimed California is a “state of laws” and would not “retaliate” against the federal government outside of vigorously defending itself in court.
But, the “war” has only begun.
