Saugus boys edge Cowboys

Saugus track and field traveled to Canyon on Thursday, with the Canyon boys narrowly winning 70-66 and the Saugus girls winning 81-54.

Troy Chairez took first place in the 400-meter with a time of 50 seconds flat, the 200m with a time of 22.7 seconds and the 4x100m along with Carson Strickland, Micah Adeyemo and Jeremiah Finley with a time of 44.1 seconds.

Nathan Tripp of Saugus had a huge final throw in the shotput with a distance of 514.5 feet, but Cowboys’ Jacob Lopez came back for the win with a final throw of 53-9.5 feet for the win.

Canyon’s Selasi Mawugbe won the triple jump and the high-jump. Justus Ramos won 400m with a time of 61 seconds flat.

West Ranch track and field beat both boys and girls Hart teams’ 86-50 and 103-33, respective­ly.

Golden Valley traveled to Valencia with the boys winning 81-55 and the girls losing 82-54.

Giants 1, Dodgers 0

On opening day the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the San Francisco Giants 1-0 at home.

Clayton Kershaw pitched six-innings giving up one and striking out seven.

Giant Joe Panik hit a solo homerun in the fifth day for the gamewinnin­g run, spoiling Kershaw’s day and giving him the loss.

The loss is Kershaw’s first in a franchise-record eight consecutiv­e opening day starts.

Yasmani Grandal and Kershaw each ended the night with two hits each.

Ty Blach got the win for the Giants.

Athletics 6, Angels 5

With one out in the 11th inning, Athletics’ Marcus Semien hit a game-ending RBI sealing with 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Kole Calhoun, Zack Cozart and Albert Pujols all homered for the Angels in the loss.

Chris Hatcher gets the win for the A’s and Noe Ramirez gets the loss for the Angels.
