Knight surprises by voting in favor of farm bill with King Amendment

Rep. Steve Knight has stated his opposition to the disastrous “King Amendment” in the past, so it was shocking to see that he voted yes on the recent farm bill that included the King Amendment. This vote contrasts sharply from the values of the state that Rep. Knight serves – California.

The state of California has a documented history of passing forward-thinking legislation that takes the interests of all of its citizens and businesses into account, as well as the interests of animals and the environment. The King Amendment is a direct attack against California’s (and all other states’) ability to create their own laws to protect the health and safety of its citizens.

This dangerous amendment could overturn countless consumer safety laws, environmental regulations, state agricultural laws and even hard-fought animal welfare laws. I hope that Rep. Knight will reconsider his vote during the upcoming revote on the farm bill and remember why he rejected the King Amendment in the past. If you, like me, want Rep. Knight to continue fighting for the values and interests of Californians, join me in contacting him and urging him to vote NO on the U.S. House’s next attempt to pass the Farm Bill that includes the King Amendment. Earth’s finite resources: Something’s gotta give

We may all want to start thinking of ways to control Earth’s population. A finite Earth, rapidly becoming overpopulated, cannot sustain human population when capitalism’s basic profit philosophy is “continuous growth.” Humans pollute Earth. The consequences of human suffering become apparent as living becomes increasingly miserable; life expectancies keep falling, and suicide rates keep climbing. And to top all that, there’s global warming.

Global warming disasters, on the rise, are Earth’s way of telling us to pay attention. Stop being distracted by petty conflicts and the daily hum-drum nightly killings shown on local news, and start fearing the “extinction of civilization” if we cannot stop Earth’s temperature rise.

A news media vacuum now exists that needs to be broken. It impedes discussions of fair and balanced solutions. It’s up to everyone to fight for a sustainable Earth. Future generations are depending on us. Gerald Staack Santa Clarita

Roadway rehab is a waste of beautification money

I find it odd that, in the middle of a five-year drought, our elected City Council members have decided to landscape and irrigate most or all of the major roadways in the valley. They have money to do this but the property owners have to pay $25 per year to fund the parks. Hey, folks, how about taking the wasted “beautification” money and put it toward the parks? Glad to see ol’ Whatzisname back at The Signal’s editor’s desk

I am so excited to discover that The Signal has brought back Tim Whyte as editor. While Mr. Whyte was in charge, reading The Signal was one of the highlights of my day. The paper was informative but also fun to read. There was a real sense of community in the paper that has been missing for some time. Mr. Whyte reached out to the readers to get our opinions.

I particularly enjoyed the Escape weekly ‘magazine’ with its input from John Boston and others, with laugh-out-loud stories.

I hope this means our local paper can again be “The Great Signal!” Donna Escamillo Canyon Country
