Why Would We Want an America Patterned After Failed Socialism?

Two news stories caught my attention, so I had to do some research.

1) In New York, a 28-year old woman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, running for the “Democrat-Socialist” party, was elected to office. She was an organizer for Bernie Sanders, and her platform is easy to research and capsulize: Destroy capitalism, limit private property, open borders, free, health care, food, medical, education, housing and legal assistance for everyone. In other words the standard socialist laundry list of Marxist-Utopian desires.

2) The border “crisis,” where tens of thousands, even millions, of poor people from around the world, lately largely from Mexico and Central America, risk life and limb, fortune and family, criminal gangs, deportation, separation and sometimes even death, to gain entrance to America. The same America that the left characterizes as unfair, racist, exploitative, unequal and unjust. Given the world as we know it, and the conditions in Central America, and even Mexico, isn’t it obvious that our country is, at its worst, better than anything leftist politics can create anywhere in the world? (Millions of the world’s poor seem to think so and have voted with their feet).

So, my question is: Why does anyone able to read a newspaper suggest that we turn America into the same repressive, state-controlled mess that has never created anything but bankruptcy and refugees? Richard La Motte

Council Ignored Opposing Views in Approving Changes Affecting Homeless

I was in the audience at the City Council meeting June 26. Many voices were raised in opposition to changes the council put forth on amending Title 14 of the Santa Clarita Municipal Code concerning parks and other public places. The changes put forth involved prohibiting many personal actions of people, such as washing, sleeping and cooking in public places. The council quickly approved the changes without even reading the written comments. My comment was among the written ones.

I wonder where your reporter was during this long debate? This is an issue that may affect everyone in our valley and deserves publication. Susann Rizzo

Why We Should Be More Patient with Our Pragmatic President

In recent political conversations, and I really don’t get into many, I’ve come to the conclusion that our esteemed President Trump is still better than what we could have had. Here’s what I mean:

Mr. Trump is a “pragmatist” type of president. By definition, this means he’s “dealing with things sensibly, realistically and in a way that is based on the practical rather than theory.” So, this is why a lot of people are upset with his firm decisions on border control, gun laws and his foreign policies. People may not be looking at him with this view in mind. I don’t think we’ve ever had such a president like this before. (Maybe he reminds me of Reagan a little.)

So, give this some thought and maybe you can help your liberal friends calm down to the point of waiting and being more patient with our president. Casey McMichael
