Deputies seize six pounds of marijuana, cash
During the commotion of a bank robbery in Valencia on Thursday afternoon, deputies stumbled upon a pair of unlucky suspects and arrested them on drug-possession charges — after deputies reported finding several pounds of pot.
Deputies Chris Martin and Edgar Quintana heard a call on their radio about a bank robbery in progress at the Logix on the 27000 block of McBean Parkway, shortly after 3 p.m., when a blue Nissan Rogue swerved and nearly collided with their patrol car.
“We conducted a traffic stop for an unsafe lane change,” Martin said. Both vehicles pulled into the driveway of the United States Postal Office on Creekside Road.
Quintana approached the SUV and noticed a strong smell of marijuana, Martin said, adding that after questioning, the driver admitted he had the drug inside the vehicle.
When deputies searched the Nissan, they discovered about six pounds of marijuana in vacuumsealed bags, and $5,760 in mostly large denominations.
As deputies were detaining the bank robber at the shopping
center across the street, Martin and Quintana of the Special Assignment Team arrested two Minnesota men on charges that they were in possession of marijuana for sale.
“It’s a timing thing,” Martin said of the deputies’ arrest.
The suspects, Justyn Sanders, 26, and Derrick Thompson, 22, both from Minnesota, were released from custody Friday morning on $750 bail.
