CLARIFICATION:
An article in Tuesday’s edition omitted an explanation of which documents need to be filed by City Council candidates, and with which government entities. The story also contained incorrect information about the status of three candidates who have completed their paperwork, but have yet to be officially certified as qualifying candidates.
Here is a summary of the pertinent information, courtesy of the city of Santa Clarita:
• The City Clerk is in the process of qualifying candidates for the 2018 City Council election. The city clerk is confirming registration status of all signers on the nomination papers and qualifying both ballot designations and candidate statements. Nomination papers will be available for public review once the nomination period ends.
• The Form 501 is a candidate intention statement and is a required form to file with the city clerk’s office. A candidate for state or local office must file this form for each election, including reelection to the same office. When to file: File the Form 501 before you solicit or receive any contributions or before you make expenditures from personal funds on behalf of your candidacy.
• The Form 410 is a statement of organization and the original is filed with the California secretary of state and a copy is filed with the city clerk’s office. Who files: recipient committees: Persons (including an officeholder or candidate), organizations, groups, or other entities that raise contributions from others totaling $2,000 or more in a calendar year.
• All other campaign forms (460, 470, 497) must be filed with the city clerk’s office for the city’s municipal election. The city clerk’s office is the filing official. Only the Form 410 (statement of organization) is filed with the state.
