Crossings receive upgrades
Three existing crosswalks in the Valencia Auto Center are now upgraded to improve pedestrian safety, according to city officials. Drivers are expected to drive at a lower speed in the area as well.
On Tuesday, the city of Santa Clarita said the crosswalks on Creekside Road, between Valencia Boulevard and Auto Center Drive, are now raised and landscape safety islands have been added to the center medians to offer pedestrians a place to stop before fully crossing the road.
The upgrade will now allow “pedestrians the ability to safely stop before completing their trek across the road,” the news release read.
To further improve the safety of those who travel through that area, the speed limit has decreased from 35 to 25 mph, or a business district speed limit.
In May, the city awarded the construction contract for the crosswalk improvement project and adopted the resolution to reduce speed limits, with work starting in early June. The project was funded through a local assessment district, to which the auto dealerships contributed.
According to the city, a large quantity of shoppers from all over the state roam through the Valencia Auto Center as it is one of Southern California’s largest auto centers. It is estimated that more than 300 pedestrians cross through Creekside Road in that area every day.
