Conquering the three-foot putt

Golf Tip:

- with Hans Kersting

I saw a post on social media recently stating that Tiger Woods has had 418 putts on tour this year from three feet, or closer.

Of those 418 putts, he has made ALL 418!

Now, I realize there are some Woods haters out there, so this statistic doesn’t impress them. I, on the other hand, can’t tell you how impressed I am by this number!

There is no shot in golf that can make or break a round like the threefoot putt.

When you are confident from that distance, you play a bit more aggressively. This type of play will ultimately allow you to reach your full potential as a golfer.

There are different ways to practice your three-foot putts. Some players form a circle of golf balls from that distance around the hole.

This allows them to hit putts with different breaks. Other players prefer to putt from a stationary spot and see how many they can make in a row.

I don’t necessarily consider one to be better than the next. The most important thing for you is that you make the commitment to practice these putts.

Challenge yourself on the putting green. Once you are able to make ten in a row, try to make twenty.

Keep bumping that number higher and higher. If you miss a putt along the way, you need to start over! Starting over when you don’t reach your goal will increase the pressure you feel as you get closer to the end.

Creating this pressure will prepare you for those putts on the course. I guarantee it.

Back to Woods. I find it impressive when I work with players who can play an entire round of golf without missing a three-foot putt.

It’s hard to do.

Now, imagine making 418 short putts in a row under the pressure of the tour. Whether you are a fan of Woods, or not, that is impressive.

Challenge yourself to become better on three-foot putts, and you will not only score better, but the game will become much less nerve-racking.
