If you were waiting for a signature victory, look no further.

The Master’s University women’s volleyball team beat No. 14 Columbia College in a true road game Saturday, validating what had already been an impressive start to the season.

The win, which came by a 3-1 score at the Hampton Inn Classic in Columbia, Missouri, was part of a double-header, and the Mustangs weren’t finished showing they can compete with the NAIA’s very best.

Master’s pushed No. 1 Lindsey Wilson to five sets, falling in the finale, 15-4, but hardly wilting under the pressure of playing an opponent that lost all of five sets last season on its way to an undefeated national championship.

The Mustangs are now 10-3 and will open Golden State Athletic Conference play on Sept. 7 on the road against Ottawa University Arizona. Master’s will return home on Sept. 13 to play the University of Saint Katherine in a non-conference match.

Senior setter Kayla Sims, who totaled 76 assists during the Hampton Inn Classic’s four-games, was named to the all-tournament team.

Earlier in the tournament, Master’s lost to No. 5 Park University and No. 3 Missouri Baptist University.

Cross-country opens with promising meet

The Master’s University men’s and women’s cross-country teams opened in impressive fashion Saturday at the Mark Covert Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea.

The Mustang men, who are coming off a season in which they won an eighth straight GSAC title, took sixth place as a team Saturday in the

Methum leading the way with a time of 25 minutes, 47.5 seconds in the 8K race. He placed 11th.

The Mustang women, fresh off winning the first conference title in program history, were led by Hart High grad Mikala Fairchild, who took 15th place in a time of 18:58.3 (5K) and helped her team to a sixth place finish in the non-NCAA Division 1 race.

Men’s and women’s soccer own the weekend

TMU men’s and women’s soccer each played two home games over the weekend, displaying the kind of offense and defense each hopes will carry it to a GSAC title next month.

Valencia High graduate Luis Garcia Sosa was especially dynamic. The junior tallied a goal and three assists over the weekend as TMU beat Oregon Tech 2-0 on Friday and No. 23 UC Merced 5-0 on Saturday.

The Mustangs (4-0) received votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll and could move into the ranks the next time around.

TMU women’s soccer rode Hailey Gomillion’s game-winning goal in the 85th minute to a 1-0 win over Southern Oregon on Friday, and Gomillion was at it again Monday. This time, she scored in the 76th minute to create some breathing room in a 3-1 Labor Day win over visiting Benedictine-Mesa. Mustang Lynnae George scored in the 16th minute to answer an early goal scored by the Redhawks. TMU is 3-2 on the year and currently ranked No. 17 in the nation.
