COC hosts Hart District students for National Manufacturing Day
The Santa Clarita Valley celebrated National Manufacturing Day on Thursday night as parents and students headed to College of the Canyons for a panel presentation, displays and activities that presented the opportunities available in the fields of design, engineering, fabrication, robotics and distribution.
Hosted in the Student Center at the college’s Valencia campus, James McKinney of Google’s Startup Grind led a panel presentation offering information on the skills and characteristics that employers are seeking today.
“It’s all about attitude, “NASA astronomer David Ciardi said when listing the characteristics that he searches for in an employee.
“It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in,” he added. If you have integrity, the right attitude and work ethic, then you will go far and learn from those around you.
After the presentation, attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with the professionals, who joined families at their tables to see how students will take what they learned and incorporate it into their daily routines.
The festivities continued Friday when more than 900 Hart District students traveled to COC to enjoy additional activities conducted by various SCV advanced technology partners, such as JPL, Lockheed Martin and Advanced Bionics, said Dave Caldwell, a spokesman for the William S. Hart Union High School District.
Students also met with current robotics competitors, NASA High Altitude Student Payload personnel and participated in hands-on engineering and fabrication activities in COC’s FabLab and MakerSpace.
