Foothill League’s power struggle
Prep golf: West Ranch and Valencia set up intense competition for league finals
In the penultimate Foothill League girls golf meet of the season, Valencia’s Ashley Song claimed the medalist title and consequently set up a very interesting scenario for the individual league finals.
Song was named medalist, carding a 2-over 28 for the honor at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore on Tuesday. Her score ties her up in the individual standings with West Ranch’s Noelle Song.
The two have identical average scores at 38.5. The have the same stroke total at 196 and both sit at 154 with the high score out.
“It’s awesome to have such a competitive field this year especially because Ashley is right by my score,” said Noelle Song.
“It’s awesome to be able to play with her too because she’s in my group,” she said. “It creates this mindset of competing back and forth to see who makes this short, who makes a birdie on this hole.”
Noelle had just come off a medalist performance in the Burbank Optimist tournament, where she also won the “closest to the pin” contest.
Her confidence from the tournament helped her to a second-place tie with Golden Valley’s Jasmine Reblando on Tuesday at 6-over.
“Every year I’ve been trying to get a higher place and I won this year, so I think that boosted my morale and motivated me to finish off the
season strong,” Song said.
Valencia won the team competition at 231. West Ranch was second at 233 and Hart was third at 244.
In the team standings, the Vikings take the lead at 873 followed by West Ranch at 876, then Hart at 947.
“This year it’s definitely been a power struggle between West Ranch and Valencia,” Noelle said. “(Today) is our sudden death match and … it adds a little bit of pressure.”
Foothill League meet No. 6 will be held at Elkins Ranch in Fillmore with teams teeing off at 1:30 p.m.
