State of the City set for Thursday
While just more than two months remain until the end of 2018, the city of Santa Clarita plans to share its accomplishments for the year — and what is yet to come — at its annual State of the City Luncheon, scheduled at the Hyatt Regency Valencia on Oct. 25.
This year’s theme — “City of the Arts” — will highlight what officials have called an “artistic renaissance” since its growth in arts education, art grants, and popular events and exhibitions.
Since the formation of multiple groups and plans like the Arts Commission in 2009, the Arts and Events office in 2003 and the Santa Clarita Arts Master Plan in 2016, the city has helped widen arts and cultural programming, ultimately gaining Santa Clarita a “reputation as a city of the arts,” City Manager Ken Striplin said in a newsletter earlier this year.
Mayor Laurene Weste said the theme this year is very special to her, as a supporter of the arts, and that “it’s time for the city to embrace the arts.”
While details were not released, Weste and Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean said residents could expect to learn a lot about their city in “a really fun way.”
Besides the arts, all five members of the City Council are scheduled to present the latest in several topics including public safety, homelessness, traffic safety infrastructure, park enhancements and open space.

Officials may recap some of the most recent happenings such as the groundbreaking of the Laemmle Theatres in Old Town Newhall, the San Francisquito Open Space ribbon cutting and several project updates supporting the Santa Clarita 2020 fiveyear strategic plan.
The event, to be held at 24500 Town Center Drive, is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. While online ticket sales have closed, those interested in attending can still call to reserve a seat and should plan to pay at the door.
