Vets, families to get keys to new homes
A ceremony set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Twenty-four veterans and their families are set to join dozens more in entering their new homes on Centre Pointe Parkway designed for veterans.
A key presentation ceremony to their new dwellings is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the residential enriched neighborhood on Saturday, located at 21550 Center Pointe Pkwy.
This would mark the third and final installment of the California Department of Veterans Affairs Residential Enriched Neighborhood, a 78-home project to offer low-income veterans an opportunity to buy a home. Applicants must qualify for a CalVet home loan, provide sweat equity by building the home and complete self-sufficiency courses.
The first two phases housed 54 families in 2015 and 2016, according to Stacey Chiang, a spokeswoman with Homes 4 Families. For this installment, six out of 24 homes were built late last year and the rest completed this year.
Funding for phase three was donated by the city of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles County, who offered $350,000 each.
Dignitaries like Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste is set to speak and be a part of the presentation.
“These homes make such a difference in our veterans’ lives and their families,” said Weste. “It’s an important thing for our nation to do and I’m glad we are taking the initiative to make sure they get the support they need and to have a firm foundation in the community. It’s such a nice time of year for them to get home in time for the holidays.”
Other speakers and presenters include CalVet Secretary Dr. Vito Imbasciani, Rep. Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Santa Clarita Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean and Councilman Bill Miranda.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is set to also have a veteran art show by veterans and military family members who live or will move into the neighborhood.
