Consistency is key to be successful in the PGA world

Did you happen to follow the RSM Classic?

For those of us here in Santa Clarita, there was plenty of excitement following local golfer Jason Gore.

Gore is a native of Santa Clarita, and he was near the top of the leaderboard throughout the entire tournament. More impressive than Gore, however, was the victory by Charles Howell III.

CH3, as he’s known by many in the golf world, has been a member of the PGA Tour since 2000.

Before that, he was a standout golfer at Oklahoma State. Since his debut on tour, CH3 has played in 529 PGA Tour events.

His recent victory at the RSM Classic was only his third victory on tour. His most recent victory had been at the Northern Trust Open in 2007 at Riviera Country Club.

To play in 529 PGA Tour events is a remarkable accomplishment.

What’s even more remarkable is to have maintained your PGA Tour status for 18 consecutive years, with only two career victories prior to this last one. This is proof that CH3 has been a rock-solid golfer for a very long time.

In his 529 starts, CH3 has 90 top-10 finishes. Think about that for a moment — 90 top 10-finishes!

That is an average of one top10 finish in less than every six starts on tour. All of those top10 finishes add up to one thing — lots of money!

You wouldn’t realize it unless you are paying close attention, but Charles Howell III ranks 20th on the PGA Tour’s all-time money list with career earnings of over $37,000,000.

I realize that the career earnings list is a bit skewed because of the amount of money earned now versus in the past. Regardless, for CH3 to rank 20th on this list is surprising to say the least.

I have never met CH3, but he has a great reputation on tour as one of the really good guys.

Given his talent, it is safe to say that he has underachieved by winning only three times. Given the money he’s won, however, it is safe to say that he has overachieved by earning $37 million with only three victories.

I consider Charles Howell III to be a great example of perseverance. Golf is difficult, and playing tournament golf for a living can be a lonely struggle. CH3 deserves plenty of credit for what he has accomplished.

I have a feeling he still has plenty of great golf ahead of him.
