Champion of education
College recognized for its dedication to education at annual event
College of the Canyons was recognized for its dedication to education at the third annual Champions of Higher Education celebration, which occurred earlier this month in Los Angeles.
The college was one of 12 California community colleges that were honored by The Campaign for College Opportunity after it was able to significantly increase the number of students who are earning an associate degree for transfer degree, school officials said. The school currently offers 27 associate degrees for transfer, which allow students the ability to transfer to a number of California State University campuses after meeting the minimum requirements.
“We are honored to have been recognized as a 2018 Champion of Higher Education for Excellence,” said Chancellor Dianne Van Hook. “The success of our ADT programs can be attributed to the hard work from faculty, as well as our curriculum committee and academic affairs department.”
Between 2013, when the first degrees for transfer were awarded, and 2017, the number of degrees awarded at the college has grown 703 percent, according to school leaders.
“As we enter a new year,” Van Hook said, “we commit to continuing to find and create ways to eliminate achievement gaps and increase transfer rates for our students.”
