City: Help design SCV skate park art piece

- By Tammy Murga Signal Staff Writer

A permanent public art piece at the Santa Clarita Skate Park will soon be underway, but the city wants feedback on where it will goes and how it will look.

On Monday, the city announced that a brief 5-minute survey, to help determine the look and specific location for the design, is now live online at scskatepark.com.

Participants will have the chance to choose color combinations for the paint project and location options, including on concrete benches, walls of the half-pipe tunnel or areas around the bridge.

Miguel A. Del Real, an emerging mural artist from Chicago, received approval from the Santa Clarita Arts Commission last year to carry out the project proposal. The project is part of the commission’s 2018 work plan and public art proposal.

He’s known for his intricate line work that’s often contrasted with a variety of colors and designs influenced by calligraphy and indigenous patterns. From his website, Del Real’s work encourages viewers “to reflect on life as a microcosm amidst a larger universe. Shifting focus from the big picture to observation of details is what gives meaning to this artwork and also reflects the interconnectedness of life and multiple layers to our existence.”

“I’m looking forward to building connections with Santa Clarita’s skate park riders and listening to their voice. I want to involve them in the process of the design concept,” Del Real said in a statement.

For those who would like to learn about design and painting workshops, Del Real is set to bring Santa Claritans workshops about urban art and painting techniques. Two opportunities are scheduled, from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 23 and from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 24, and those interested can sign up at the end of the survey.

Del Real also will be at the skatepark, located at 20840 Centre Point Pkwy., from 4-6 p.m. Feb. 22 to meet and greet the community, as well as answer questions about the project.
