Local school districts prep for fundraising event

Family resource fair to take place on Feb. 23, will feature workshops and instructional training courses

The Sulphur Springs Union School District and the William S. Hart Union High School District are once again ramping up for their annual “Many Families, One Community” family resource fair set to take place on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Officials have said it will be the third time the two districts joined alongside one another, as well as a number of partners from the community and local first responders, to provide academic and social-emotional resources for families, according to Catherine Kawaguchi, the Sulphur Springs superintendent.

This year, the free event is set once again to feature instructional training courses and workshops that provide information on academic requirements for high schoolers, healthy eating and habits relating to internet usage, as well as the support available to Santa Clarita families, according to event organizers.

“Maybe there’s things going on in a person’s life, and maybe they don’t realize how they can get help and still be successful,” said Dave Caldwell, public information officer with the Hart School District. “There’s going to be some breakout sessions regarding what students and parents should be preparing for in terms of the transition from primary to secondary school, as well as mental and emotional help.”

Additionally, the event will feature food trucks and a free kids program for the first 250 kids in attendance. A showcasing of student art is also scheduled, with each submission displaying the spirit of the Many Families, One Community theme.

While students are participating in the free kids program, personnel from both the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department will be leading demonstrations and speaking with students about what it means to be a first responder.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Golden Valley High School campus located at 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway.
